  1. Congratulations!  Nursing is a great field.   Your nursing instructors will let you know which books are mandatory, be prepared because they are expensive.  If you are using your own money and not scholarships or what not, I suggest you look at amazon.com, and ebay.com or half.com for cheaper books once you get the ISBN numbers.

In addition to what they deem required get a good medical dictionary and/or a  medical terminology book if you have trouble with medical terms.  I also suggest a good NCLEX review book Like Saunders or Mosby's Eyles Review, those are good study guides, and sometimes instructors have similar test questions.

I wouldn't buy any equipment until you get to class because the may have rules on colors and types.

    GOOD LUCK!

  2. Congratulations...nursing is a great career and being a RN offers so many more options today than it used to. As far as prepping...just get ready to study A LOT. A medical dictionary helped me a lot...I was at least somewhat familiar with a few disease processes when we went to discuss them. Get a good care plan book. It has all the disease states in the back index and you can look up common nursing interventions for each one. Otherwise, just wait until you get in class. Your syllabus will show you exactly what they want you to learn from each semester. Also, if it's a good Nursing school they will format your test questions in the same manner you will be questioned when you take boards, so learn that style and get used to it and good at it. When you get out, I'd highly recommend taking a NCLEX review course. Good luck!

  3. If you are starting the clinical part instead of just doing pre-reqs then be prepared to shell out the money. Most nursing students in their clinical phase need a stethescope, the school will tell you which to buy, a drug book and of course the scrubs. You have to buy all your books and medical equipment with your own money.

If you are still doing your science pre-req's then study hard and make sure that you get your highest grades in your science class.
