  1. I have been practicing Tea Kw on Do for over a decade now, and I can honestly say it is the best thing I have done for my body, mind, and spirit. $85 is definitely worth it! Before you start though, see if both the Tea Kw on Do school and Karate schools offer a free trial-lesson. Find out which style suits your fitness and self-defense goals best and go from there.

    Good Luck!

  2. I am a Tae Kwon Do student, and I think that it is more suited for light, agile people. You should try Aikido or Judo. Otherwise, I like Tae Kwon Do more. Also, 85 a month is not bad at all.

  3. You asked this a few mins ago, but ill elaborate for a laugh.

Where i live 85 quid sounds like a crime. Your probably a bit young but ty university clubs, they tend to cost next to nothing, (ive seen some for 10 euro a year. Yes im not american, not even english.)

Fight alot, already answered muay thai, next question

1 hour classes? i was holding down the shift jey by accident but its the right expression ! hour long classes? That sounds like the coach is ripping you off. Half hour warm up + cool down. 10 minutes drinking water and breaks, 20 mins to introduce techniques.

New advice, go and ask to sit through a full class. You'll feel like your sticking out like a sore thumb, who cares, id never pay for anything unless i can take a look. Id let first timers have a class or 2 before they pay to see if they like it, with insurance of course.... So try before you buy.

TKD is a light sparring sport, meaning you gain actual experience of moves in fighting. It is based on kicks with very little emphasis on punching. The kicks done in TKD are fantastic, if somewhat useless in an actual fight. However TKD did spawn what is now western kickboxing, although karate will lay claim to this aswell.

Karate is simialr to TKD in that it involves alot of of kicks, punches are more frequently used in karate than TKD. Again fantastic looking kicks.

When you say heavy built i would like to shout boxing at you.

When you say you really like to fight does that mean you'd like somebody to tell you some fantastic ways to kick and punch non moving targets (or look like you were used for motion capture in dead or alive/tekken), or as in an actual way to hold off/possibly hurt somebody.

If you are of the former, Karate and TKD are excellent at hitting shadows really hard. Karate more so.

If you want to learn how to hold your own without the extra acrobatics and mysticism i would recommend muay thai (thai boxing). Its basically another style of kickboxing thats styled towards doing the most damage whilst trying to prevent it to yourself. Often seen as severe kickboxing. Elbows and knees here aswell

Karate and TKD are great, if your mad about one of the 2 go for TKD. But if you dont mind a blood lip, go for something a bit more fight orientated.

Also check Judo, jiu jitsu, BJJ (all grappling/wrestling) and MMA (kickboxing + grappling).

  4. taekwondo-kicks stirkes punches and throws

  5. well tae kwon do focuses more on kicks and aerial attacks whereas karate focuses more on hand strikes and whatnot...

are you a acrobatic, flexible person who likes to kick S**t?

or are you a dude who likes to break bricks with your hand.

whichever one you feel more comfortable with man, the prior is tae kwon do and the latter is karate (:

  6. forget both if you want fighting skills do some Krav Maga its isreali street fighting the other schools of martial arts dont like it because it lacks honor but in reality its just because is more effective. I dont think its much more and if you take it long enough you will even learn sentry removal now that just kicks karates *** any day of the week!

  7. I teach tae kwon doe, and it is great for someone just starting out. And if it is a good school it will help you get nice n fit. I've trained in karate and didn't like it as much. Tae kwon doe is better at teaching you how to defend yourself and gives you self confidence. As for the money that all depends on the school, everyone is different.

  8. well first hings first you should  take karate first because its basic thaen move onto tae Kwon doe karates cheeper

  9. didnt you ask this question before?

well tae kwon do does lots of jumping kicks so karate is better than tae kwon do if you are heavy. then again if you are heavy and you do the jumping kick you have a lot more weight behind it. but i sugest karate.

  10. It all depends on what you're looking for in terms of outcome or interest. Karate and Tae Kwon doe are very similar however.

Karate is Japanese and uses blocking, punching and some kicking. They do Kata (forms) and sparring (controlled while wearing padding). It is an old martial art that helps to teach respect and discipline. It IS effective in real life situations and alot of people take it. It uses more blocks and strikes than Tae-Kwon-Do. Be sure you go to a traditional school, not one called "American Karate".

Tae-Kwon-Do is a Korean art and is mostly kicking. They do some limited blocks and punches but is mostly kicking. It looks impressive but isn't very good for real life situations. The classes are usually geared more to children and tend to cost alot more. There is alot of yelling that is supposed to keep you focused. This is a good tournament art.

$85 sounds pricey. My dojo where I trained karate (in Montreal) it costed around $120 for three months.

  11. Tae Kwon Do teaches a lot of kicks and then punches, then some throws. But the Olympic ones or whatever it is only teaches how to fight in tournaments and win points.

Karate teaches punches and kicks and they were pretty technical with it too. Being expensive or good depends on the gym.

I suggest Karate for a guy that's heavily built. You'll see why if you go do Karate or Tae Kwon Do. I personally prefer Karate more.

  12. Go kick butt Squirrel!

  13. It depends on what you want to learn. Karate and tae kwon doe are obviously 2 different fighting styles. Look both of them up and learn what each one offers.  Do one and if you don't like it quit and try the other one.

  14. tae kwon doe they do kick boxing and my son loves it. We pay $25.00 for 8 times he goes one to two times a wk.

  15. Japanese Jiu-jitsu.

    Best wishes :)***

  16. Consider jujitsu.  It is a good style to help you lose weight and get limber.

Agree, 85 bucks is a good deal.

  17. karate focuses more on the fighting and stuff like that and tae kwon doe focuses on self confidenve and respect. I took tae kwon doe and got up to a 2nd degree black belt. I had to stop because I hurt my knee but I owuldve kept going It taught me alot.

  18. Karate, strikes and blows > punches and kicks

    doe is grapple and trow

    85 is really cheap

  19. Consider which type of practice appeals to you. It is important to think about the reasons why you want to train and what you hope to gain out of your training. Is it for physical activity, mental discipline, self defense, any combination of the three?  This can lead you in the right direction.  It is also important that you choose a system that you think you can realistically stick with and are comfortable with if you are going to make martial arts a part of your life.
