I was thinking about buying a schwinn ditch, is this a good bike?

I saw it at costco for 260 dollars. Is this a good price? Does Schwinn still make good bikes like they did a long time ago? Would I be better off spending a couple of hundred dollars more at the local bike shop, on a Trek?

Yes, go to a bike shop.  Particularly, ask around to find a reputable bike shop that will take the time to ask you about your riding style and to fit you properly.

Do not simply go by brand.  Any bike that does not fit you is wrong.  A good bike shop will not sell you one that doesn't fit you.  Believe it or not, there are good shops like these.

You will not save money by buying a lower priced bike at some outlet because you will spend the difference in repairs when you take it to a bike shop for them to fix/adjust/rebuild the bike you bought.

Finally, if you go to a reputable bike shop, they may have a new bike that's a couple of years old that they'd be happy to sell at a discount.  Or they may have a good used bike of high quality.

If you develop a relationship with your bike shop, they will happily take care of you.

AS TO SCHWINN,  there are three levels.  First, there are the low-end Schwinns that you find at the big box stores.  Those are not of better quality than the bikes sitting aroudn them.  Then, there are the Schwinns you find at a bike shop.  A road bike there will run from $500 up.  They are well-rated and worth considering.  Consider a Schwinn LeTour for about $599.  The other "Schwinn" is now the Waterford.  Very, very good bicycles.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T BUY A BIKE FROM A DEPARTMENT STORE, GO TO PROPER BIKE SHOP AND BUY A PROPER BIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALSO NEVER GET A HUFFY, SHWINN OR PROGEAR OR ANY OTHER DEPARTMENT STORE BRAND BIKE!!!

I would go to a Cycling shop and get proper advice there. For a little more money the Trek is a better bike than a "Costco" (whatever) Schwinn 260 dollars one.

You do not need to spend a lot of money on a good bike, but also, you get what you paid for, and at a discount store....

I just would not do it.

You will be better off at a bike shop, spending about $400 on a bike. Why? You wouldn't believe the cartoonish disasters I've seen on those bikes-brakes mounted upside down, deraileur cables doing into brake levers, unsecured quick releases, etc. Also you are going to get a quality bike that is much safer. Bikes at big box stores are cheap, but will wear out faster, have horrible brakes and can be spotted a mile away by a bike meachanic who has had nighmares about working on one.

I used to have a Schwinn bike as a child...they were made very well...I don't know about this one, but I bet it's a good one!
