i'm going into the 9th grade, and my mom thinks it's a good idea, but the thing is, she works all day, and wouldn't be home with me. i was wondering if you have to have a parent at all times, and i was also wondering who i'd contact to get enrolled, and if they supply you with everything you need. (I live in Pennsylvania if that helps) and tell me anything you know about it if you would. (how it works, what you do, how many hours per day, how many months it is until the next grade up, websites, ect.) i know absolutely nothing about it. so anything will help. thanks!

  1. Hi. I'm also doing cyberschool. It is K12 Virtual Academy (I'm doing the Arizona one). You do not have to have a parent with you. The only thing that you parent needs to do is put how many hours of the day you worked on school work.

Here is the K12 site...you can find out how to get enrolled on this page http://www.k12.com/

Yes they supply everything you need (computer, equipment, etc. They even reimburse you for your internet) As long as you have the right amount of credits you can actually graduate in your Junior year (11th grade) instead of you Senior. I think this year you have to have a minimum of 20 hours per week, at least for high school students. You have 6 classes (a foreign language, math, science, history, language arts, and a class like art or something like that). The teachers say that you should spend about an hour for each class per day but that can fluctuate depending on how fast you work. The cool thing about it is that you can pretty much do your work whenever you want as long as you have the right amount of hours and as long as your work is turned in by midnight on Sunday. The school has clubs that you can do as well (Student Council, Newspaper, Creative Writing, Travel Club, etc.) I'm probably forgetting a lot but for now thats enough lol

  2. Find a family that you can spend a couple days with. A friend of ours does this. Her mom's a 1st grade teacher so she's gone all day.

A few days a week she goes over to a family's house where there is a stay at home mom and 2 little kids. She hangs out there and does her work online. It's not as lonely and she still gets her work done.

And by the way, she has a great social life with church and orchestra.

    Best of Luck

  3. You do not have to have a parent there with you to be enrolled, but what you need to think out, is being home alone all day,  and what your going to do , you  wont study all day, and your social interaction will go to nothing all day,  as a teen you get most of your social time at school, so to cut that out completely could be a very bad thing,  i would just want you to question why you want to do this

and really talk it out,  talk to other students that do it,

my girls said it was both good and bad,  there are bad things about being home schooled, or cyberschooled,  you must acknowledge them, and be ready for them ,

    good luck

  4. Hi. I'm also new with cyberschool. I'm enrolled into K12 Virtual Academy. Here's a Pennsylvania one: http://www.pavcs.org/

I'm in the California one =)

From everything that I've research, here's my answers.

K12 Virtual Academy is still a public school but it's just at your home on your computer. Everyday, you'll log on and see what sessions/lessons you have to do for the day. In high school, you'll have 6 classes which would be 6 hours a day. About 80% of the time you'll be using your computer. Other times, you'll either print worksheets or do work from you workbook/textbooks or something else. It's actually much better than a regular high school because you get to move at your own pace. Like, say you want to move ahead each day because you finish your work faster. And you don't have to wait for other people who don't want to succeed in school at all.

K12 provide you with all of your materials. The books, computer, printer, and other materials. They will ship it to you before school start and you'll have to ship it back when school ends, which is all for free.

Your parent doesn't have to be with you at all times. But she still needs to be there to make sure that you all doing all of your work and not slacking off. But there will be teachers (one for each class) who will be making sure that you are not falling behind tremendously. You will be able to contact them by email or phone or face-to-face meetings.

For me, you'll be able to get the courses that you want easier because you won't be wait listed.

And for people that say you won't get any social interactions and a high school experience, then they're wrong. You could still be able to join clubs/sports outside of school and hang out with your friends. Or you could still talk to people online (myspace). Plus, it's not like you'll be kept from the public/real world forever. You would still be able to interact with many people after high school. And you probably won't want to do drugs or drink at wild parties, because that's how it's like at my school.

    Good Luck!
