I live on a busy street and I thought it would be pretty easy to sell utility trailers that I would make (buying the frame and building the rest from scratch). How tough are they to make? What do basic 1,500 lbs. capacity trailers sell for? A website I found sells the frame for $215-$250 depending on the quantity you order. They also sell any other kind of trailer frame imaginable (for those interested, utiltiytrailerkit.com).

So....what do you think? Buy them for $250, put another $150 into it (or more?) and sell for, like, $750-$900? Is that too much? About right? Your thoughts please...thanx!!!

  1. I agree with the other answer-ers.  Dealing with the standards of the DOT and MOT are a huge pain.  Also, you have to factor in the cost of everything you will need like axles, hubs, springs, wheels, tires wiring etc.

  2. Are you a certified welder? Can you afford the liability insurance in case something breaks on one of your units? Too much can go wrong with your idea.

  3. don't know where you are from, but around here we have tractor supply, and orscheln selling these " lawn mower trailers" if the company you are buying the frames from could compete with these company's they would be selling the complete trailer. not to mention liability insurance, and d.o.t. registration. if you want to build 2 or 3 to sell to your buddies, go for it, if you want to sell them to the general public consult a lawyer
