  1. Go to your local fire department, ask the firemen about how to apply, the testing needed, or any other questions you may have about how to become a fireman.

Many firemen live at the station for 2-3 days a week at 24 hour shifts, so they are always happy to see people who have an interest in firefighting.

  2. Do some research. Get the recruiting information from any departments you would be interest in working for. That will give you the requirements, an idea of what kind of testing is involved, and the pay. Go to those cities and stop by some firehouses and tell them you're considering a career and ask for advise. Try to get a feel for the sort of people you'll be working with there. Do they like where they work? Do they talk about the good things or just complain? Let them tell you about how you advance  and the difference between at-will employment and civil service. There is good and bad about both. Civil service gives you more protection but makes it hard to get rid of bums and sometimes promotes good test takers over good leaders. Does the fire department operate EMS, and does everyone do their time in EMS? (You'll be responding with EMS, anyway, but you might not want to do a big block of time on an ambulance.) If you decide to to ahead, get in shape. The physical agility test counts, and the academy is pretty physical at times. It's worth checking out any place you'd be willing to live. Ask about how they schedule. Most do 24 hours one and 48 off, but not everywhere. FInd out about special units - rescue, heavy rescue, marine, haz-mat, special ops, etc., if you think you'd like more intense specialties. I'll say this. It's fun, and a lot of firefighters work other jobs, especially trades where they they can partner up with other firefighters. Keep in mind, though. It's not Rescue Me. That's just soap opera. I've never seen those guys washing a truck or cleaning and rotating hose loads or painting hydrants. You'll get hot, dirty, and tired and kind of beat up some times and occasionally scared, but you get to play with some impressive equipment and get to do some things other folks only wonder about. All things being equal, I'd select for climate. You're going to sweat like a pig anyway.

  3. I tried out for the fire dept but I couldnt pass the physical test.

  4. Well...first of all you may need to rewrite your question.  'Going out for the fire department' sounds a bit odd.  Like a kid who says he is going out for the football team.  If you'd like to begin a career in firefighting, I would go to a local station and talk with some of the firefighters that are there.  They can tell you the ins-and-outs of the business and send you down the right path.  Good luck!!

  5. My boyfriend is a volunteer firefighter, that wants to be a paid one day.  You didn't really give me a lot of info to work with, but this is what I can tell you.  My bf started out as a volunteer, you have to fill out an application and stuff like that.  Then, he has started taking classes that teach you how to be a firefighter.  Which will give him experience when he goes to apply for a paid job.  Also, please make sure you are working out and fit!!!
