I was thinking of making a play gym for my parakeet is wood with carpet on top of it safe for it?

I live in a small town and state where they dont sell play gyms so i was just going to get some cardboard and make a ladder out of wood and cover it with carpet for its safe and then buy a birds play ferris wheel that it moves with its beek and put some carpet since cardboard is toxic and make like a see-saw what other things should i have in my play gym and is wood with carpet on top of it safe?

carpet should be ok, but they could start chewing on it too. also, it will be hard to clean cause the p**p gets stuck to the carpet.
