  1. Sure! Any Wire Will Work As Long As You Have A Phone Line Hooked Up To Your House. If This Doesn't Work, Contact Your Local Service Provider.

  2. Cat 3 and Cat 5 are cables - yes you can use them for phone lines.

RJ11 is a phone jack and RJ45 (and assorted numbers) are network jacks that a CAT3/5 cable with a RJ45 end can plug into.

The wiring is different between phone and LAN connections so you can not plug a phone into a wired LAN jack althought it will fit. This means pin 1-8 is not the same for LAN as 1-6 is for phone.

However any 22 gauge wire will work for phone including CAT cable.

  3. Telecom using CAT3 for the phone lines. I use it also for DSL so it does work. There is also CAT 5e called Ultra Phone line cable was sold under Belkin and now APC. People who have DSL modems should use this cable to replace the phone line. You can also use it phone line replacement too.

You'll still need the jack boxes you use now for your phones, just be wired for Cat 5e or Cat 3.
