I was told that some cars have pushrods and some don't, so what takes place of the pushrod?

  1. On a pushrod engine lifters ride on the camshaft. The lifters push on the pushrods, which push on the rocker arms, wich push the valves open. On an overhead cam engine, the cam is above the valves and directly pushes them open.

  3. all cars has a cam, but some dont have push rods. the lifters run on top of the cam lobes, those are overhead cams.

  4. kelly_f_ has a pretty good answer. Engines with overhead camshafts do not need push rods. The cams can directly push a rocker arm, which opens the valves allowing fuel and air to enter the combustion chamber (intake) or exit the combustion chamber (exhaust).

    No pushrods mean fewer moving parts, less weight and less complexity.
