  1. the UN is the United Nations.  The organization is the second or third envisioning of all represented nations and draw the line on what is and what is not acceptable in nation behavior.  Related to War the UN might investigate what is happening to make sure rules of warfare are being observed and that no one side is breaking international rules of treating prisoners and so forth.  In layman's terms you can think of the UN as the International Government that makes rules and polices those rules in regards to human civility.

MASH or M*A*S*H, stands for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital and in locations where warfare is, there is always a medical location associated with it, whether it is on the front lines or further back in occupied territory.  It is important to get medical treatment to the military men and women as soon as possible to save their lives.  (WHich was the topic of the show, saving the lives of the allied troops, the locals as well as the enemy)

  2. MASH semantics & history, 101:

Why was there a police action/war: Read this article. Much better than any summary I could do. The basic premise was that both North and South Korea were trying to re-unify the country. North Korea was backed by Communist China and South Korea by the United Nations & the U.S. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_War)... Southeast Asia is a much conflicted area, similar to how the Middle East is - a lot of border and territorial disputes.

M*A*S*H - Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. These were first used in the Korean Conflict, to try to save more wounded soldiers. The surgical units were based as close as possible to the front lines so wounded soldiers could receive basic medical attention as soon as possible. The 4077 unit in the TV show and movie were based off the real life M*A*S*H 8055

U.N. - The United Nations. This is the international government body that still exists today and is based in New York City. The United Nations was ultimately in charge of the armed forces fighting to keep North Korea & China from conquering the country.

If you were watching the episode on TVLand tonight, called U.N., the Night and the Music, this episode takes place during the last season of M*A*S*H, where they were wrapping up the conflict. The United Nations was doing an inspection of the camp (ultimately under their jurisdiction). I haven't seen the episode in a while, so I don't remember the specifics of it.

  3. united nations

    Mobile Army Surgical Hospital

not to be rude, but if you google them you would get your answer

  4. U.N. stands for United Nations.  I don't remember the episode so I can't tell you why they were there.  Possibly to make sure that no rules were being broken.  I think the U.N. keeps track of whether prisoners rights are being abused or not, but I don't really know.

M.A.S.H. stands for Mobile Army Surgical Headquarters.
