  1. I don't think "I were" is gramatically correct at all, at least I can't think of an example off-hand.

"I was" could be used as in "I was about to walk out of the room, when I realised I forgot to pick up my keys".

In english essays, you generally do not use "I" at all, unless the question asks specifically about your opinions or a self-reflection etc. If absolutely necessary to refer to yourself, you could use "the author".

  2. Were is for the plural pronoun

  3. you would want to use "i was" more often then not.

an example of "i were" would be like:

"if i were you, i wouldnt do that"

"if i were 8 ft tall, i'd play basketball" (if i WAS 8 ft tall, would work as well...)

    good luck.

  4. The question is not clear.  "I was" is correct in stating  something happening in the past.  Instead of I were - "we were" can be used to describe in third person.

  5. Normally, the past tense of the verb "to be" is: I was, he was.

"I was" is past simple tense, but "I were" is the optional use of the subjunctive form of the verb "to be" after words like "if", "as if", "wish" and "supposed".

The past subjunctive of the verb "to be" is "were".

e.g. "If I were you, I would go home" or "if he were here, he would tell you himself".

  6. Use "I was" most of the time.

Use "I were" when the term comes after the word "if".

    For example:

I was very happy to see my friend.

If I were you I wouldn't do that.

    I hope this helps!
