Any info that can lead me up to the name of it would be great if it cannot be identified. Thanks!

  5. Yes, that's a Jerusalem Cricket alright.  I grew up in LA too, and when I was a kid many people called it a Potato Bug.  I don't know why.  It doesn't look like a potato and it's not a true "bug", but that's what it was called.  These insects often venture into swimming pools and drown too.  Most people are scared of them but they are harmless.  They live in burrows in the ground and feed on vegetation, etc.  They ARE a cricket and are therefore related to other crickets, grasshoppers, Katydids, and Praying Mantises.  They do not have striations on their rear legs or on wings which they don't have, and therefore cannot "chirp" like regular crickets or Katydids.  Also, they cannot jump like grasshoppers, crickets, and Katydids.  They are masters at burrowing though.

They are prayed upon by birds, spiders, moles, and shrews.
