  1. Drift.

Pray search and rescue find you.

  2. start swimming baby! Good idea to wear the lifejacket :-)

If you can't swim with a lifejacket, you really need to reconsider if a watersport is right for you.

  3. Don't get off the ski unless it's sinking.  If it's too far to swim to shore you're going to have to wait until someone finds you.

It's always a good idea to have plenty of safety equipment if you're planning on going offshore in anything, especially a jet ski.  A water-proof VHF handheld radio and GPS would be a good investment.  You can even get them built together these days.  They also have personal e-pirbs now.  I saw them advertized just last night but I'm sure they'll cost an arm and a leg.  It's about the size of a hand-held GPS and will transmit a distress signal to a sattelite indicating your location and notify the Coast Guard.  It will work anywhere you have the sky.

You should always file a "float plan".  That means you leave detailed information on where you're going, what you're doing, safety items you have with you, when you expect to return, and most importantly, when to call the Coast Guard if you don't return on time.  Leave this information with someone on shore and remember, let them know when you get back!
