  1. I would get a rat instead.  They are 1,000,000 times smarter and love to be held, and if you get a fancy one, like a hooded rat, they aren't as creepy looking.  Get a female so you don't have to look at those over-sized onions that the males have.

  2. For one guinea pig and a cage, cedar and water bottle, food and a bowl, it will run you around $130 for everything.

You should however check your local paper to see if anyone is giving away a guinea pig with supplies or selling for cheap.. Many animals that come from Petsmart and those other type of places are often bred at mills, which means lots of inbreeding and terrible care.  You hear about it more with dogs but lots of animals are bred at these type of places.  By answering an ad, you're saving a life that might have been taken to the pound and put to sleep if someone like you didn't come along to save it.

  3. Well first off don't go getting a rat. Personal experience, I wanted a guinea got a rat-short story-the rat was awful even though i knew what i was doing, and had all my facts straight. It just was not a fun pet, for me. ANd i got tired of having my friends say EWWWWW every time they came over. Anyway.. try not getting one at Petsmart/co. They can be wonderful companions, however there are  WAY to many being just thrown away to shelters. Sadly.

Try looking for Guinea's on petfinder, or petclassifieds, and in your local paper as well.

As far as a cage, if you spend 20-30 at target for storage cubes (right now is a great time to purchase as they are on sale) , maybe another 20 at Home Depot for some zip ties and flooring of your choice, you can build a  HUGE set up or small set up, for your new guinea. I've done this, and make them for a living now. If you want some picture's , just contact me thru answers, and i'll send you some photo's.

cavycages.com is a great place to look as well. For not just cages, but most all the info you'll need.

    Good Luck!!

  4. We got our guinea pig at Petsmart about 2 years ago, we paid 35.00 for him, his food, bedding, were reasonably inexpensive, we also purchased a cage with all the other things he would be needing, I think the cage cost about 25.00 as it was a starter kit. I think total cost for everything was about 95.00. advice: make sure your guinea pig gets daily vitamin C it's very important. We give ours lots of raw spinach, parsley, carrots, things like that he loves them. He loves watermelon, canteloupe, and honeydew also.
