I was wondering how the delta skymiles program works

First you have to register for the program on Delta.com Once you do that, then every time you book a flight with Delta or one of their partners, use your skymiles number and you will be credited based on the length of your flight.  You can also earn miles through hotels and credit cards.  As far as using the miles, once you have collected enough miles, you can use them towards a portion or all of the fare of a flight.  Again, if you want to use your points to pay for a flight, you will have to give your skymiles number upon booking.  Delta's website has more information.
