  1. Start with the earliest date you are certain of.

    If this is a birth of a a parent or grandparent, then obtain the birth certificate.

    This will give you the parents names including the mothers maiden name.

    Then look for the parents marriage and obtain the certificate.

    This will give their ages when they married, so will give you a starting point for looking for their births.

    You can leapfrog back in this manner until 1837 when civil registration started.


  2. To elaborate on the previous answer: Start by interviewing all your relatives.

    The questions should include names & dates, but you want

    the stories, anecdotes, and details that you won't be able to get from official records.

    I recommend you discretely record (audio or video) the interviews in addition to taking notes.

    I can't stress interviews enough. Not only are relatives your best resource, it's a resource that (to put it delicately) won't be around forever.

    After you've pumped them dry <g>, THEN start collecting the official records.
