I was wondering how to go about solving this equation. 7: X :: 35:5. The directions say to solve for X.?

I know how to solve algebraic equations, but I'm not sure what the colons mean in this process. Any help is great!

  1. I think its a ratio problem. Its saying 7 is to X as 35 is to 5. You could set it up like 7/X = 35/5 and solve. The answer is 1.

    7/x = 35/5

    might better

    and as the others had answer, the X is 1 :D

  3. 7 to x = 35 to 5

    7 goes into 35 , 5 times so another way of saying this is

    35 to 5x = 35 to 5

    Your two first terms (35) are tha same so yo can take them out of the equation to get

    5x=5

    so x=1  

  4. You have to start with the inner two variables (x & 35) and then the outer two variables (7 & 5)

    35x = 7 * 5

    35x = 35

    divide by 35 on each side

    x = 1
