  1. I have explored almost every avenue of buying a car from going to a dealership and using craigslist. going to a dealership is better in most cases, but they have a lot of hidden fees associated with used cars that you have to fight and you have to deal with the shadiness of the salesman. The huge benefit is that you may have a 30,45 or 6 month warranty with purchase sometimes.

As for Craigslist, I am back on craigslist after not too successfully having luck at the dealership and am about to buy a car. You tend to get more info from private sellers on craigslist and maintenance records. Make sure that you never forward any money and that you are able to have it inspected. Always ask for VIN # and get as much information as you can prior to going out and wasting your time. Craigslist posters are notorious from hiding info about mileage, dents, and previous accidents from their ads, so getting VIN # and having the car inspected should be on the top of your list.

  2. ALWAYS agree to meet the seller in person. Have the car checked out by a mechanic, and if the seller does not agree to that, walk away.

All used cars are sold "as-is", there is no warranty implied, no 3-day "I can give it back" period, nor Lemon Law to protect you. I don't care what anyone else says, you don't have an "out" if you sign onto the transaction.

There are plenty of scams. If you find a late-model car on there at a very cheap price, it's probably a scam. If they are not local ("I'm overseas, will pay shipping for you, will let you test the car for 7 days, I'm in the military, I'm getting divorced, etc.") then ignore it.

Again, MAKE SURE you and your friend can meet the seller in person. Go with him/her to assure safety.

  3. I would say most of the deals on Craigslist are legit. I have used Craigslist to sell several things. Like any internet buy/sell internet site, you need to be careful. I like it because you can deal with local buyers and sellers. We sold a boat through Craigslist. Were able to deal face to face with the person interested. If using Craigslist to find a car, I would search for a car being sold somewhat locally so you can deal face to face. This is a big purchase and you don't want to get taken. Do not under any circumstances send money through Western Union (or similiar) to anyone for anything! There are so many scams out there. As far as getting your money back, etc. No, once the sale is made, it's done. Using Craigslist is somewhat like buying a car listed in the classified ads in the newspaper.

  4. Craigslist is full of con men and scam artists.  Be careful who you're dealing with.

But yes there are plenty of legitimate deals on Craigslist and hundreds of good cars are bought and sold thru that site every day.

As with any used car purchase you have to be careful. You must get any vehicle you are interested in inspected by a certified mechanic.  You must do your research first and ask a lot of questions long before you give anyone a nickel.

There are no lemon laws or guarantees to protect the buyer of a used car. You bought it, it's yours.    Unless the seller specifically puts a warranty or return policy in writing you are buying the car AS IS.

  5. I have sold several things on craigslist, but there are many scams with craigslist.  My suggestion is to always look at the car at the sellers residents.  Don't meat in a park or 1/2 way, always meet at the sellers house.  Then to make sure, watch them walk back into the house or garage after you leave.  If it is any legitmate deal, the seller will not care if you meet them at there house.
