We are traveling to Puarto Vallarta in a few weeks. I was wondering if any one kowns any web sites to find out what we are allowed to bring back and what not. For example, how many bottles of alcohol can I bring back. Bottles of Vanilla. Etc. Lastly what what exactly is "Duty-Free" mean.? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks. Additionally we are flying so I am aware I will have to contact the airlines for their regulations of what they will allow.

Duty free - The US and other countries impose a tax on luxury goods along with other countries. Think of it maybe as an import tax to foriegn manufactor's - It can be up to 40%.

Duty free means even when reported when you bring it in, its tax free.

  2. There is a $400 exemption for gifts and personal articles you've purchased in Mexico; anything over that amount will be taxed

One liter of alcoholic beverage per person over 21 is okay - more will be taxed; note that the state of Texas taxes all alcohol brought back from Mexico

No steroids, period; make sure you have a prescription for any other medication

No illegal drugs; if you have the slightest amount, you can be fined and sent to jail -- your car may even be confiscated
