  1. Clipping a birds wings is very easy, as long as you know what you are doing. If you have never done it before, it's also very easy to get it wrong.

Birds with clipped wings should be able to glide down after launching, but not get any lift. Often birds are trimmed in a way that makes them just fall to the floor and not safely glide. I learned this the hard way after purchasing a quaker with wings incorrectly clipped and he jumped off his cage, hit the floor and split his chest open....that was a nice little vet bill for treatment AND flight feather implants.

I'd suggest taking your bird to the vet and have the vet show you how to trim properly. The vet can show you what feathers to trim, and how far to trim to avoid cutting blood feathers. After being shown you should be able to do it yourself in future.

You could also try your local bird club or a breeder who will help you for free or a very small fee.

  2. I would say have a vet clip them because you can actually hurt it if you do not do it correctly.

  3. I suggest that you take it to a vet or professional groomer and have them show you the correct way to do it.  Once you know the right way and watch to watch out for, like blood feathers then you should be able to do it yourself in the future.
