I am going to get my PPL this summer in the UK and then wanted to get myself to a frozen ATPL in NZ. Will I have to do any conversions?

  1. JAR won't give you much I'm afraid....you will need to do the 14 ATPL ground exams and then the CPL and IR flight tests. I am pretty sure NZ Commercial and Instrument ratings will give you exemption from most of the flying but not the tests......you will be well advised to some some refresher flying anyway as things may well be different. You can do the JAR CPL test outside the UK but you need to do the IR test in JAR airspace.

There are also a few examples of people who have had trouble when they have sat the ground exams in one JAR member state and done the flying in the other but I am pretty sure that this is OK....

If you really want a JAR licence it might be cheaper just to do the NZ PPL then launch straight into the JAA training....

    Good luck!
