Question:

I was wondering if there recently was a rule change for volleyball in the last few years?

I am almost 20 years old and my whole life we played volleyball to where on a serve you couldn't hit net, and all these girls are telling me that it is legal to do that, I have played that way all my life and that was never legal. I did look up the rules and the girls were right, but I just want to know if it has recently changed to that or has it always been that way? To me it doesn't make since to count a serve that hits the net, and it doesn't count in tennis, ping pong and other games so why volleyball, I think thats dumb.

  1. i think if the ball touches the net, but goes over used to be illegal, its legal now though

  2. The let serve went into effect probably close to 6 or 7 years back. So at one point, it was illegal for the ball to touch the net. But now, the ball can touch the top of the net, and still count as a legal serve. I personally am in favor of the rule. It seemed like ever since the rally scoring began, more rules needed to change to up the pace of the game. Hope that answers your question :)

  3. this changed in my area around 1999 (i'm in Winnipeg in Canada) when they introduced rally point scoring.

  4. The reason its differnet now is because in the last few years volleyball is now played rally scoring ( every play someone gets a point) and the ball is allowed to touch the net when served, But its use to be you only get a point off a serve and thats where the ball was not allowed to hit the net. Im not positive when it was chaged though.

    Hope i helped.

  5. Rally scoring has been around for a number of years. Most rule changes happen in College first as experimental and then change in the lower levels. That's what happened with Rally scoring. Another couple of rules that changed too that you may want to know about is the centerline. If a player crosses the line during a block, or hit, it is permissible as long as it did not interfere with the other player on the other side or interfere with play, and the player has to return back to his or her side.

Another rule is the underneath the net rule on the sides. A player can cut through under the net between the antenna and the poles as long as they don't step on the other team's court to play a ball, but when they bring the ball back it has to return on the same side of the out pole as it left. I hope I explained it to you enough. Here's a mini diagram

The player (X) can get the ball (O) underneath the antenna and bring it back on the outside of the antenna to play it over the net. Hope this helps

  6. its a different sport than those games and when it hits the net and the players can actualy get the ball back up, it shows how good they are

  7. They are constantly changing the rules.  Sometimes, they are major changes like the switch from side out scoring to rally scoring.

You are correct.  The "let serve" rule changed was in the last 6 years or so.  The reasoning was explained by Hol.  When the switch was made to rally, the penalty was loss of point for a minor touch of the net by the serve.  And it also makes sense.  Every other contact is allowed to hit the net and go over.  Why not the serve??

The RUMORS for the next changes after the Olympics include some minor changes.

The changes include speed substitutions.  The talk is to have the sub check in with the scorekeeper and have the scorekeeper use a sound device to let the referees know that a sub is requested.

Another suggestion is increasing the size of the volleyball slightly.  The FIVB is trying to increase the length of the plays.

I must stress that the last two ideas are just that.  Ideas for right now.  They are not going to be rule changes for sure.  After the Olympics in August, the FIVB will announce their rule changes.  After that, the USAV club will adopt the changes.  (Maybe not for the 2008/2009 season since that will only be 2 months after the Olympics.)  And the US colleges after that.  And then, the US high schools.  It could be as much as 10 years before everyone changes the rules.  And of course, the Olympics happen every 4 years and more changes will be made.

  8. In this part of the world - New Zealand - along with hitting the net on the serve being legal - the scoring changed, where every serve counts (ie. You can win the point, no matter which team served - with the old system, it could take forever to score on your serve - and it's usual to go to 25 with this new system).  Another addition - was that foot contact can now be legal - but not for receiving the serve.  Of course this is not for doing soccer kicks, but rather to have light foot contact with the ball, to keep it in play.  The rule changes were to make the game even more dynamic, and faster.

With Table Tennis - the scoring has changed for a shorter game.  With the better Table Tennis players these days - they play a very dynamic game - being able to play far from the table - they are able to return your smashes, and even attack them.

  9. No, the rule hasn't always been that way. It changed less than ten years ago (I think 8ish, but not sure), I am not exactly sure when it was put into effect.  I think that it should not be allowed, but it goes over a net like a tip does, so I think that may be why they changed it. Lol, I wish they would change it in ping pong, I always end up serving lets. I definitely agree with you, because it's annoying when they change rules for no apparent reason.

  10. The let serve rule has just changed in recent years.  My mom is a ref. and that is what she told me.  Depending on where you are will depend on if they have changed their rules yet, but in high school and college let serves now count. It is weird, but that is the way it is!

  11. Not that i know of......
