  1. You can hear music and watch videos of some of the dances at the Palo Alto Buddhist Temple's website.  (Of course, different temples have different choreography sometimes.)

But it's okay if you don't know the dances beforehand!  Just have a good time and keep your eye on the teachers...

  2. Check You Tube by wording such as Bon festival, Bon odori, tanko bushi etc. Some of your quoted songs may not be existing at all actually though.

  3. You can hear excerpts of some bon odori songs on Gujo-Hachiman's website, but those songs are particular to that town.

If you are in Japan, you could ask friends or coworkers for advice. Towns that don't have real musicians sometimes play a tape--they have to get that tape from somewhere!

  4. why don't you tried kanjani8's 'naniwa iroha bushi'?

it sounds good for taiko and popular too

    mixed with modern a bit

    try to find at 4shared.com?

    or esnips.com?

  5. Your list has some musics which are NOT for bon odori, ie Yakyu ken is not bon odori music.

The below page has midi file for bon odori musics.

    http://www5b.biglobe.ne.jp/~pst/nihon-mi...

Check them out! They are great.

  6. Hello,

Glad to help you out.   I just attended my fifth Obon festival at

Higashi Hongwanji Buddhist Church in the Little Tokyo district of downtown Los Angeles.   The bon odori was

    terrific and enjoyable tonight.

The Southern District California Buddhist Churches have been making a bon odori music CD for the past several years.   The 2008 CD contains the following music which

includes several of the music in your list:

    Obon No Uta

    AIUE Ondo

    Hana No Bon Odori

    Hanabi Odori

    Kagoshima Ohara Bushi

    Kuroshio Bayashi

    Tokyo Gurin Ondo

    Yosakoi Naruko Odori

    Asadoya Yunta

    Gassho Ondo

    Haru Ran Man

    Haru Koma

    Sakura Ondo

    Shiawase Samba

    One Plus One

    (Kyushu) Tanko Bushi

I've found having a copy of the bon odori music is very

helpful in practicing the dance movements on your own

in addition to attending bon odori practices if they are held

at a nearby Buddhist temple or cultural center.

There is also a DVD available showing the dance movements done by the dance senseis.

    Please E-mail Wilbur at watakashi@aol.com

to request a Southern  District bon odori music CD.

The cost is $10 plus tax (if applicable) and shipping.

    Hope this is helpful.

    Enjoy,

    Mark
