  1. Yes, donkeys do have frogs on the bottoms of their hooves. ALL members of the equine family, which includes horses, mules, donkeys, zebras, burros, and the Asiactic wild horse have frogs on their feet. The frog is the cushion on the bottom of the hoof that acts as a shock absorber when the horse moves. The frog is also where most of the nerves and blood vessels for the bottom of the foot are, so it is sensitive when compared with the rest of the hoof. As a side note to "mom", the respondent who calls herself "Barbaro" is a young girl, only 13 or so years old. She probably is unfamiliar with the word 'frog" as it is used with horses. Would you be so critical if this was YOUR daughter? I would certainly hope not. This youngster loved Barbaro, like many millions of others in this country, and was heartbroken when he died in January from laminitis. She now is following Curlin- who actually looks like he might have a shot at the Derby this year. I can't blame her for missing Barbaro- I have been through the process of losing horses I love to accidents and disease once too often myself, and I know how painful it can be. I think that you owe this youngster an apology- just think how you would feel if it was your own child who was insulted this way. Enough said.

  2. I would bet that all members of the equus species have frogs.

  3. This page opens up a .pdf file that has a diagram of the donkey's hoof, and yes they do have a frog:

  4. Frogs live in ponds or weedy lakes. Not under horses hoves...

    RIP Barbaro

    GO CURLIN

  5. Yes they do, but usually donkeys and mules have a deeper "pocket" (longer hoof walls) in their hoof, making the frog a bit harder to see...

    Starlight 1:

I blitzed my original criticism of "Tasha" and "Barbaro" just for you.   Maybe I was a bit too hasty by implying that they are both idiots.  HOWEVER, I still think that if you don't know the answer, you should either research to find it, or just plain not answer.  These two are obviously "points fishing."  And apparently 5 other people agreed with me.  So before ~you~ criticize ~me~ for my opinion, my daughter will jolly well know what a frog is... as any self-respecting horse lover should and would.  Sorry Tasha and Barbaro if this offends your sensibilites, but everyone is entitled to an opinion, aren't they?  If you had bothered to look at the type of questions Tasha answers, she always answers with  a series of ?????? or even this one "What the f!@# ever"  (blatant point fishing).

Oh, and how do you know our little Barbaro fan is 13 or 14 (though most of her answers ~sound~ that way)?  It is not on her profile ANYWHERE!  And you would think that anyone who knew what colors dappled gray, buckskin and bay were would know where the frog on a horse is located, wouldn't you?  Frogs live in ponds not under horses "hoves" indeed!

It is truly sad when your justification of your own post becomes longer that your original post itself (as was yours Starlight!  You used more space criticizing me that you did with your explanation).

I'll just bet that ~neither~ of us gets Best Answer on this one!  Truly sorry ()livia@!
