  1. The Army definitely came first - the Marine Corps came later.

I was wondering when the spelling for the word 'o-r' has been changed to 'a-r-e'....

I say it is 'or' - what does your friend say?

  2. The army. It has been active since June 14, 1775. The Marine Corps has been active since Nov 10, 1775.

  3. Are you talking about the U.S., it was the Army, , the marines are a branch on the Navy, OORAH!

  4. It may interest you to know that in Australia, the Navy is the senior service.

  5. United States Army created on 14 June 1775

United States Marine Corps created on 10 November 1775

  6. The United States Army created on 14 June 1775.

The United States Marine Corps created on 10 November 1775.

    Go Army!

    Hope this helps.

  7. The Army definitely came first.Just for fun inform your friend that during the Civil War so many Marine Corps officers went South that President Lincoln did not trust the Marine Corps as an institution. The Confederate States did have a Marine Corps which was used to occupy and defend various islands off the coast. For amphibious operations the North would just load Army troops on ships and conduct the landing. The Marine Corps today loves to brag about its history but curiously omits mention of the Civil War era.

  8. Army came first

and DasReich, during the Civil War, It was cause there weren't allot of Marines to start out with. Ad beside, MORE PEOPLE in the Army left to the CSA.

Also the Marines did participate a little in the Civil War. Like at the battle of Bull Run was the first battle the Marines ever retreated in without firing a single shot.

Beside, if the Army was the main assault force at Belleau Woods, and are out numbered about 1 to 16.

They would probably just listen to the French and retreat.

Instead of being like Capt. Williams and said, "Retreat h**l! We just got here!"

Or like Gunnery Sergeant Dan Daly and say, "Come on, you sons of b*****s-do you want to live forever?" to push his troops forward in the battle.

  9. Mickey, you are right. The army came before the marines.

Marines came from the continental marines which were formed in November 1775. The army came from the continental army which formed in June of 1775.

    So the army came first.
