I was wondering what percentage of Germany's population depends on public transportation?

Germany has the best train system in the world. When stationed in Germany with the US Army back in the 1980s, there was an East Germany and a West Germany. West Germany then had 70 to 75 percent of the population depending on public transportion back then. Now that it is a whole country once again, with east Germany merging with West Germany, I am wondering what the percentage is now. Can anyone help me with this question?
