now there ws nothing else in the machine at the time, I washed them again and while it faded a little, it seems to be there for good.

Does anyone have any thoughts what might have caused it? And it there is anything I could do to make them white again, or to stop it happening again?

  1. You should let your wife/gf do your washing in future

  2. It's the water.  You probably have brown or reddish buildup in your toilet too.  Install a fine sediment filter on your water line before it enters the house.  They are easy to install and the replacement filters are pretty cheap.  You will benefit in other ways too, besides just having cleaner whites in your laundry.

  3. Wash them again.

  4. Run your washer with nothing in it with some bleach.  Then run the towels again with a cup of bleach on warm.  Good luck.

  5. do you live in donegal??  sounds like peat leaching into the water?

  6. wash them again with alot of bleach

  7. bleach them in the wash

  8. hard water?

to get them white  use a product by the dyes called bluing

      makes everthing dazzling white

Make sure they are dry... when you put them in....run some CLR

through empty machine then double rinse should get rid of the iron build up
