I baby sit a 20 month old Monday through Friday since she was 3 months old. I work with her every day on her numbers, please, thank you, yes, no, and some days her colors. But she doesnt talk! I cant get her to do her numbers, and when she says please only myself and her mother knows what she is saying. She does not say anything. Do you think she has a learning disability or just her age? all he does is huh and uhn as she looks at things. i used to keep another little girl and when she was 18 months the dr told her mother that if she didnt say 20 more words that others could understand by her next appt she need to see a speech therapist. I am just get furstrated, because i feel like i all my work with her is not working. What do you think?

  1. My neice didn't talk 'til she was three.  Its no big deal.  As long as she shows understanding its ok.

  2. i babysit  16 and 21 month olds and they don't say much either.  i think it is normal.  just because she isnt talking doesnt mean she isnt learning what you are teaching her.

  3. I doubt she is learning disabled. Her speech may be delayed. Many, many children need speech therapy and this does not mean they learn any differently. She probably understands everything you say but lacks the ability to vocalize. Does she have older siblings ? Often the reason for delayed speech or unintelligible speech is because toddlers mimic. When they hear something that is pronounced wrong or slang, they don't know the difference and they learn it the wrong way.

Try not to become frustrated, one day she may suprise you and not stop talking.

  4. My daughter is the same age and she talks a lot. prolly has a lot to do with personality. Sometimes I can see a difference in kids who have used binky's or not. Mine hasn't used a binky since she was 6 months old. my niece didn't talk until she was 2 1/2.... she always had a binky in her mouth.

  5. I think all kids are different, but do you also just talk to her a lot?  I mean, not try and teach her per se.  Just talk about what is going on around you, on the street, at the playground etc.  Does her mom talk to her?  I see again and again parents not talking to their children and then they wonder why their kids don't talk.  So many parents put them in front of a t.v. or give them a toy or jsut sit them somewhere.  You have to talk to your child constantly.
