It's more your wheelset you need to be concerned about.   It would probably be advisable to go with a 36 spoke set.  There is a guy named "Mike Garcia" who is well known for his hand-built wheels, particularly for larger/heavier riders.  His website, oddsandendos can be found at this link: http://www.oddsandendos.com/main.sc

    As far as the bike itself?  Well, I probably would stay away from carbon fiber or an uber light weight road bike, but otherwise as long as you get a study wheelset...  

    If you're concerned, I might suggest considering a "Surley Long Hauler" which is actually a steel touring bike.  It's an extremely sturdy bike made for long distance touring, where you pack on the racks and panniers to ride cross country.

  2. Look for Steel (or CroMo) frames. Much stronger than Aluminium.

    Make sure your tyres are inflated to the recommended pressure.
