$600 will definately get you a workable machine.

Stick with a good mobo like Abit, Asus, or Gigabyte that you've researched on the web and you're halfway there.

These are the most important things you need to buy when you build a computer of your own. Just be sure that when you buy each computer hardware, be sure that they are compatible. What I've given to you is just the hardware. You still need OS like Windows XP so that you can use your computer.
