Can someone give me a website that gives helpful guidelines when renting an apartment

How the rent payment should be made is usually addressed in the lease. Most places require that you mail it in and it be received by the first. If mailing use personal checks or money orders.

Some have drop boxes at the rental office, same deal, only deposit checks or money orders.

If you are paying in person cash is fine, but get a receipt!

.   You shop and look at lots of places. You get the rent and deposit amount for every different unit.  You ask questions.  Can you BBQ on the balcony?  Can you have a dog?  What if you get a 2nd dog as a birthday present?  If you called the last 10 tenants would they all say they got their security deposit back..... or did you keep all the deposits because the carpet was "worn"?  

Visit with the neighbors.  If they are unhappy, they will tell you.  

Be sure that you write the exact apartment number of your new home on the lease before you sign.  You don't want to be switched to another at the last minute.  Then move in.
