  1. Which St Johns... St Johns, Antigua... or St John, the island off of St Thomas that's part of the USVI?

  2. Look at the "St Thomas" board at CruiseCritic.com.  Click on "Boards", then you'll see the StT board under "Ports of Call".

It's a rather involved undertaking, but well worth it.  If you want to do a neat, off-the-beaten-track beach trip on StJ, do the "Linde Point Trail" in the National Park.  It goes down to Salomon Bay Beach and Honeymoon Bay Beach and you can then either hike back up or keep hiking along the beach to Caneel Bay and catch a cab to Cruz Bay.  Absolutely no facilities at all, so take water/snacks/snorkel equip, etc.  [Do a search for these subjects and you'll get lots of leads.  And try the National Park Service website.]

For even more info, you can go to vinow.com.

  3. Take a cab to the ferry. There are two ferries in St Thomas, Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook.

You will be docking at Havensight or Crown Bay depending when you will be on your cruise.

Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay St John  (about 45 minutes)

    9 a.m,11a.m,1 p.m, 3 p.m, 4 p.m, 5:30 p.m.

CruzBay, St John to Charlotte Amalie

    7:15 am, 9:15 am, 11:15 am, 1:15 pm, 2:15pm,3:45 pm

    $10.00 each way

Red Hook to Cruz Bay, St John (20 minutes)

6:30 am, 7:30 am then hourly from 8:00am to midnight

Cruz Bay, St John to Red Hook

    6 am, to 11pm

    $5 dollars each way.

The cab ride is longer to Red Hook but has more departure times. Allow the least 2 hours +  before your ship leaves. This past week it took us over a hour to get to the airport from Red Hook due to construction back up.

Always  check the times with transportation services

(340-776-6282) sometimes the ferry times from Charlotte Amalie change.

If you are traveling with at least 5 people, you may want to take the water taxi.

  4. The cheapest way to do it is NOT to take an excursion from the ship.  Your ship comes in to Charlotte Amalie harbor.  If you walk around the harbor to the area across from all the shops there is a ferry right there that takes you to Cruz Bay St John for about $7.  Once you get to Cruz Bay, take a taxi to any of the beaches.  You can check the ferry schedule online to see what times the ferry goes and returns to Charlotte Amalie.  Dont take the ferry to Red Hook unless you have to cuz then you need a taxi back to the ship.  This whole thing should cost about $23 per person.

  5. I would do it with an excursion. This way you make sure you are back on the boat on time. They will probablly take you by ferry. St. John is a beautiful island. If you like to snorkel, st. thomas and st. thomas are the most beautiful places to see the most colorful fish. They are incredible. Everytime I am out that way, I have to do that. Have a great time.

  6. The easiest way to arrange this is to check with your ship's activity coordinator.  They usually have a package for doing things at each stop and more than likely there will be a St. John excursion.

The other way is to catch a taxi.  Finding one shouldn't be too difficult.  Most taxi drivers like to wait though until they get a large group going to a single location.

There are two locations where you can catch a ferry to St. John.  The closest one to the docks is on Waterfront.  These ferries travel a bit further so the cost a bit more.  The taxi will most likely take you all the way to Red Hook.  It's a shorter ferry ride and a bit cheaper.

Once you get to St. John, if you want to get to the really nice beaches you'll have to take another taxi.  I recommend Trunk Bay.

If you can, go with the cruise ship excursion.  They'll handle all the details and you pay one time.

  7. I think you should take a taxi. At dinner the night before, see if you can get a group together to go to St.John so you won't have to wait for the taxi to be filled.
