Question:

I will be flying domestically soon, on United Airlines. Can I carry on a blanket/pillow + laptop case+ tote?

My tote is like the following: http://www.target.com/Converse-One-Star-Large-Tote/dp/B0018APDMQ/sr=1-8/qid=1218581663/ref=sr_1_8/602-1425826-7516649?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Aall%20star%20tote&page=1

Plus I will have a laptop tote/purse/case. My blanket/pillow is a twin size quilt/quilted comforter. My pillow is a regular pillow. I am a college student, and I would really like to take my pillow and blanket back to college with me. I know that in May of '06 I flew on one airline (I can't remember which one) and I carried on the blanket/pillow, plus a purse, plus a backpack. However, I am not sure about United - especially since all these new rules. Any ideas?

  1. you shouldn't have any problems, but in my experience. ask before you check your luggage that way you still have time to stuff it in a bag. or they will make you throw it away. compact as much as you can so it seems you dont have much.

  2. That is a pretty big pillow and blanket to hang onto.  Why not get a space bag and squash up the blanket and pillow in it.  You can buy them at Walmart in the same aisle where clothes hangers are.  Then it should fit in either your checked luggage or carry-on and be much smaller.  They work great for clothes in your suitcase too.

  3. United has been enforcing carry-on rules more rigidly (as have other carriers) with the new fees for checked baggage and people trying to carry everything on.  You may be able to get away with it (and based on my experience with United your chances are better than average), but it's far from certain that they will let you on with all of your items.

The tote bag and laptop case by themselves will be fine.  I've seen flight attendants allow on other items like pillows and blankets, but I've also seen gate agents make people shove things into their existing bags.  The key here is to take up only one item's worth of overhead space and use underseat storage for the rest.  If you don't use up more than your share of space your chances are much better than most.

If you have to gate-check something it will likely be the tote bag, so make sure you don't have any essential items in there (keys, medicines, fragile items, etc.) in case a gate check is necessary.

    Good luck and safe travels!
