  1. You need to have a good quality saddle that is reliable and not falling apart.

You need to find a bit that doesn't hurt the mouth at all but a little pressure. It depends on what style you are riding. Here are the websites that you should look at for the western saddle:

It is really useful for a good fit so that your horse will be confortable and happy.

    The bridle/bit:

It is really useful and I would reccommend it if you are using a curb bit or anyother western bridles or bits.

I hope this will be useful!!

  2. first, are you going into normal or natural horsemanship? i suggest you learn a little about natural horsemanship, which is true communication and partnership with your horse. here's some sites (they also talk about saddle fit, feed, ect.):

    http://www.parelli.com

    http://www.naturalhorsetraining.com (great for beginners!)

    http://www.barefoothorse.com/ (hooves)

    ...and search it on google.

are you keeping your horse in a pasture/paddock?

if so, it will be cheaper for you to build a simple shelter, with roof and two, or three, walls. thats what we built for my horses, it cost about $1,000.

here's a website for new horse owners:

It is never a good idea to purchase a horse when you  unfamiliar with its many needs.Horses are complex large and expensive, and the room for error is huge. Most spend years learning the "basics" of ownership before buying. Your asking for a crash course in horsemanship and other questions that most spend decades learning.

Lessons, boarding, clinics, classes, books,DVDs,all can help you prepare for this big step.
