  1. Lyon is a great town to just walk about. Definitely a walk through the old town is worth it. There are also some fabulous views from the top of the hill-take the funicular railway up and then walk down. They also run walking tours from the tourist information centre (Place Bellecour) although when I was there (last year) the only one in English (if that is your first language) was on a Sunday. If you are a foodie, there are also some wonderful markets, alongside the banks of the river, on the other bank from the old town, and also out by Part Dieu station (just ask in tourist information). Definitely take your appetite, the food is wonderful! I would recommend Le Laurencin in the Old Town, but really I didn't have a bad meal the whole time I was there.

  2. Hi, I'm from Lyon

To visit Lyon, you should first go up to Fourvière's hill (colline de Fourvière) where there is the Basilique de Fourvière and you will have the best overview on Lyon city. You could check evrythg you will have to see. From there, sometimes when weather is clear, you can see Alpes Mountains and the Mont Blanc.

The view is even better from the top of the Basilique (church).

After taking picture, you will have to go close to the Basilique walking or using the funicular to reach Roman theater.

Actually during summer nights, there's a festival (Les Nuits de Fourvière) with different artists each day.

Then go down from the hill to reach Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon) district and St Jean. This part of the city is part of the UNESCO world heritage.

It's made of little streets linked each other by passages through buildings.

Then you'll have to visit the St Jean Cathedral.

I don't want to be too long, it follows the Bellecour place, the City hall (Terreaux place), the opera, the Rhone river bank from Parc de la Tête d'Or (Gold Head Park) to Gerland Skate Park. you should have a drink in one of the houseboat pub along the river.

You also should visit Croix-Rousse district (was the working place for silk industry in century XIX.

If you'll stay there several days you can take a day to visit countryside outside Lyon,

    - The Beaujolais (vineyards domain) (northwest) and Villages des pierres dorées (villages where old houses are made with yellow stones so we call it gold stones)

    - The huge park in Miribel Jonage (east)

    - The medieval village of Perouges.

During night you could do the same tour, but it will sound different because od the colorful illumination in the city.

About food : You definitely have to eat in a bouchon (typical restaurant with basic local speciality food such quenelles, andouillettes (kind of sausage), cervelle de canut (it's a cheese).

If you've got money you should go "Leon de Lyon" restaurant close to Place des Terreaux or go to Paul Bocuse restaurant in Collonges (4km north of Lyon), he's one of the better chefs in the world.

  3. Lyon is a great city, and August is in the heart of Jazz Festivals. Check out the Jazz-Café at the Lyon Opera.

Open from June 11th to September 8th 2007, from Mondays to Saturdays, 9 am to 11 pm.

Breakfast, lunch-time formula, afternoon tea, an aperitif during concert time...  Jazz concerts every evening at 7.00pm, 8.15 pm and 10 pm

This website is really useful to find great restaurants and things to do during your free time.
