I will be in Prague, Bavarian Alps, and Budapest in Sept and Oct.?

Question

I am told it can get pretty cold. Should I take an attractive down coat or an ugly "outdoor" hiking-type coat that has a liner, a plastic hood, and lots of zippers? I'm a native Californian and these darned cold weather places are always a challenge.

Budapest and Prague should still be quite warm in Sept / oct unless you are very unlucky. In the alps I would have some outdoor thing for the wind block or rain/snow
