I will be staying in Vienna for 3,5 days. I know what the major sites are, but I was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions for an itinerary so that I could maximize my time in Vienna(as I don't have a clue how much time is typically spent at each place). Do you have any general safety tips for Vienna (I am a 22yr old male and will be traveling alone)? And my last question, do you know any special deals that allow you entry into all of the major tourist sites for a fixed price?

  1. Major sites? Well, St. Stephens (2h) is a fix starter, as well as the prater (2 - 10h) though I don't know if there is anything going on this time of year. For night life I recommend the Flex or the U4 (2 famous clubs in Vienna. Flex is more underground, U4 more mainstream) Then there is all the Imperial Kitsch from Schoenbrunn to Sissi. I don't know if you are into such a thing. Countless museums from the Lichtensteinmuseum over the Glass Museum at Lobmeyr to the Albertina. Then also the Opera, theater and the MuseumsQuartier (opposite the two big museums Nature- and Arts-historic Museum)

Regarding special deals there is the WienCard (or ViennaCard) which is a 3-day-travel-card with a lot of discounts for tourist locations and shopping. Check out: http://info.wien.at/article.asp?IDArticl... for more details.

Have a nice stay in Vienna!

  2. Yes, skip the Prater at this time of year. The WienCard is a good way of getting around, you'll enjoy unlimited free travel by underground, bus and tram for 72 hours as well as a number of extra benefits at museums and such.

Also, take a look at the 72-hours City Guide at http://www.wien.info/article.asp?IDArtic... You don't have to follow it slavishly, but it might get you started. Enjoy your stay.

  3. hi itay,

im from austria and i see that u already got good advices, but i wanted to recommend you also some sightseeingtrips you can do with a guided tour and that are very interesting. maybe i.g. you saw the movie "the thrid man" . you can make a guided tour in the "underground" vienna where the movie took place. which might be interesting for you. also a lot of tourists like to visit the "hundertwasserhaus" from a famous austrian architect. here is a link

but surely 3 and 1/2 day isnt too much, as there are really many, many places to watch. most people watch cathedrals, but i think with those guided tours you will learn much more.

the tours take about 2 hours, when you watch "schloß schönbrunn" you certainly should plan for half a day.

in my opinion is your time too short for a museum as there are really too much. you certainly shouldnt miss out to make a roundtrip along the "ring" as there are  a lot of famous old buildings and you can use the tram for that too.

prater is not much going on in winter.

    wish you much fun!

  4. Vienna Is a great place to spend time in. Definitely go to the museum quarter(21st quarter), Visit some of the many parks which are just stunning. From a sight seeing point of view St. Stephan's cathedral, Schönbrunn and Vienna State Opera are all great to go and see. My favorite church was the Karlskirche. For food and an experience in itself go to the Naschmarkt. These are all great places to see but nothing beats in my opinion just waling the streets and finding a nice little patisserie and having a cup of tea and a tart.
