  1. Relax and drink fluids for now, it will be more intense so keep options open for epidural. I had epidural even did not want before. Make sure someone goes with you and helps you. Ask doctor what is the latest time to get epidural so they know you may need it, since they will have to get anestesiologist for you. Epidural does not hurt and it is been 5 months I have no any long term things going on. I got it when I was dilated 4 and when it took only couple hours after that. But then you get plenty of rest and are ready to push. Also listen to the delivery nurse and do exactly what she tells you - that is the best advice I got and used it. Go through one  contraction at the time and do not think what is next. Breath deep and slow. It is easier if you can stand up or sit up and maybe hold on to someone - it does hurt less then you sitting (contraction wise). Good luck, you will do fine, we all did it!

  2. first labors are usually long and especially if you have to be induced, i dont understand why they do that it usually does not help and the baby will come when ready. epidurals are okay, im not sure what long term effects your refering to but you should not be against them, they are a lifesaver. good luck!

  3. Well, I will be totally honest with you... contracts with the pitocin are quite painful.  I was doing a natural birth, but they ended up having to induce me after a while because my water had broke, and once the pitocin kicked in I was begging for an epidural.  I haven't had any issues related to the epidural either, and it's been almost a year.  Good luck!

  4. With my daughter i was induced at 7am and started pushing at about noon.

  5. Inductions are painful but the longer you hold out without an epidural the better. First labors and induced labors can both be pretty long. I had an epidural to early when I was induced, my labor stalled and I had a c-section in the end. With my second baby I went into labor on my own, got the epidural at 6 cm and delivered vaginally. I didn't have any long term effects from my epidurals and recommend it big time. Just wait until your labor has really progressed before you do get the epidural to minimize the chances of stalling your labor.

  6. i was also induced due to high blood pressure and also 39 weeks. i was put on potocin at 6am then they broke my water at 8am (thats when i started having contractions) i put up with the pain for about 2 hours then i got an epidural. i dont know what happened but after 12 hours i was still only 4cm and i was already a 2cm when i got there. i ended up having a c-section cause my blood pressure was getting higher and so was my daughters. i wish you the best of luck and hope everything goes well. sorry i didnt really answer your question just figured i would give you an answer if you end up getting the epidural! good luck and congrats! :)

  7. Say yes to drugs!!!  Normally, in any other circumstance I would not say that, but after 18 hours of labor I feel drugs can make your delivery enjoyable.

  8. I was induced with both my kids (6 years old and 8 weeks) and the pain was fairly intense.  I didnt really have a gradual build up, due to the meds, it came on pretty strong and fast.

I found being in a jetted tub helped, but once I got out the pain was even more intense.  That was the point i got an epidural with my first child. I was about 4 centimeters. I had no complications, and it was almost immediate relief.  Was so happy with it that I told the Dr that I loved him, lol. My labour speed right up once I was calmed because i wasnt in pain anymore.  14 hours of labour total, 3 of which was pushing.  He was a big baby (9lbs 10oz)

With my new baby, there was no tub to use, but I walked for hours to get my labour going.  Was induced at 10am, got my epidural at 9pm and gave birth just before 11pm.  Things moved fast after the epidural.

After my daughters birth, I developed spinal headaches, a complication from the epidural.  Very unpleasant, but I dont think I could have given birth without the epidural.

Best of luck to you :)

  9. I know exactly where your head is at..I know you can't help but be scared right now.. but focus on what you will have in a couple of days time, you will forget about the birth and will be in baby heaven and dealing with a worse pain (i reckon) sleep deprivation which lasts a lot longer than your labour.

I was induced at 41 weeks with the gel and went into labour within a few hours after 1 application. Labor is different for everyone....I didn't want an epidural, did all my calm birth classes and prepared well, but my labour went too long and i was exhausted, so i had an epidural, didn't even feel it.

Of course there could be long term effects with anything like that, but i know a load of people that have had epidurals and not one of them with any problems post labor.

    Good luck

  10. I was induced with both of my kids.

I was induced on my due date with my daughter.  The dr started my pitocen at 8 am and also broke my water at the same time.  I was 2 cm.  I got my epidural around 9 before my contractions were really painful because the dr told me if I wanted one I had to get it then due to the availablity of the anthesiologist.  I was 10 cm at 215 pm and she was born at 236.  So I labored for about 7 1/2 hours.

With my son I was induced at 39 wks 4 days.  The dr started my pitocen at 8 am and my water broke while he was checking me.  I was 4 cm. ( The dr said if i hadnt been induced that day I would have had my son within the next 24 hours anyway.)   I waited as long as I could but around 930 I called for my epidural because my contractions were very painful.  It only numbed one side of me though and I could feel everything full force on the other side.  I waited a while longer to see if it would kick in and numb my other side.  It never did.  Around 1030 I called the nurse because I couldnt handle it anymore.  I was literally ripping the sheets off the bed it hurt so bad.  They gave me more meds and I was all set to go. The dr checked me right after that (it was 11 am) I was only at 6 cm.  I fell asleep and woke up at exactly noon with extreme pressure.  I called the dr in and my son was born 17 minutes later.  So I labored for a little over 4 hours with him.

It all depends on your tolerance for pain but I have heard pitocen makes your contractions harder.  As for the length of your labor...that all depends on your body.  Some people say with induction they labored for almost 24 hours with their first.  Like I mentioned earlier mine was only 7 1/2 hours and that was with me being at 2 cm for 3 weeks before they induced me.  With my son I dialated very quickly, going my last 4 cm in only an hour.

Good Luck, congrats in advance and do whatever you think you need to do, even if that means getting an epidural.  They really are great! They let you relax and enjoy your labor and delivery.  I personally dont think I would have remembered much of my deliveries if I hadnt had an epidural because I would have been too focused on the pain instead of my surroundings and watching my family's reactions and so on.

  11. inducing without an epidural could be very painful. induced labor is usually stronger than naturally going into labor. if they are using pitocin, you will want the epidural after a couple of hours. if you can do it without it good for you.  can't say if your labor is going to be long or not cause everyone is different but at 39 weeks if you haven't dilated some or had a few contractions, i would say you might have a long one. i was induced with my first one. labored for 23 hours and ended up having a c-section in the end. that doesn't mean it will happen to you i'm just giving you my story. i have three children and all of them have been c-section cause labor just wasn't working.....i had epidurals with the first two and a spinal with the last one.  good luck with your baby. don't worry how bad it may or may not be. you will forget immediately. that beautiful baby will take away all the pain. all of it.

  12. My first labor start to finish was 8 hours. which involved an induction that went very quick it took 1 hour "but I started at 5cm" then the baby was really high so they didn't want me to push cuz it would make me tired pushed for 3 hours the baby would not fit had to have a c-section. Did this all natural till the whole c-section thing witch was very upsetting. but if I can do it natural anyone can!

  13. I was induced at 41 weeks. I did take epidural though since my contractions were overlapping or thats what I was told. And the pain was getting to a point to which I couldn't bear it any more. I don't know if inducing worsens the pain or not. I should think not. But once I took the epidural I slept like a baby until 5 in the morning when I was woken up to start pushing since I was 9 1/2 cm dilated. Don't worry about anything. Just keep telling yourself you will get to see the one who has been kicking and pushing and hiccuping in you for the last 39 weeks and it will all be OK. All the best, BTW no side effects from the epidural.

  14. the epidural is no big deal and you will love being pain free- the problem is that you are being induced AND your water will be broken. There is only so much time that should pass after this procedure. DO NOT ALLOW your doctor to keep you in a lengthy labor after this. Like the other mom said, if you are not dialated- you will and should be C-sectioned. I learned the hard way. I was induced and my water was broken. I spent 27 hours in labor and my baby was brain damaged because of that. So trust me, C-section is a GOOD thing. Do not prolong a labor that is not progressing. I don't want to scare you- it's a rare situation. However, it's something i wished i had known. good luck to you and your baby. im sure everything will go well. congratulations

  15. Epidurals are your FRIEND!!!!  But wait as long as you can stand labor will go quicker that way :  ) congrats and good luck!!

  16. Congrats

    Epidural wont hurt you
