It all depends upon what country's passport you are holding.  If you are from a visa waiver country, then you will not need a visa, otherwise, you will.  That you are in Canada on a student visa has no bearing on your eligibility to enter the US -they are two separate, sovereign countries.

If your home country is one of those visa-free countries, then no, you won't need a visa.

You could try to sneak in across the border, but if they ask you for identity papers, and you can't produce it, you'll be in big trouble. You might even get your Canadian student visa revoked and be sent back to your home country.

Depending on what country your passport is issued in you might. North American and EU citizens don't need one. Check with the US state department to be sure.
