I would like to know what type of Internet is available for people who do live on boats. I will be on a Mooring all summer with day trips here and there. I know there has to be something because you need the Internet for Navigational purposes. Do you or have you ever lived on a boat and can you provide me with some ANSWERS?? Thanks

  1. k...first off...you do not need the internet for Navigational purposes hun...forget it...don't even think about it....nobody does that.

NOW...think wi-fi...find a hot spot and piggy-back for free when shopping marina's. Otherwise you'll need a cellular or satellite phone uplink for your pc. There are plenty of email programs for you to check out as well.

try the "west advisor" at www.westmarine.com

    tough decisions.

  2. Most people who live on boats do not use the Internet for navigational purposes.

At many anchorages and moorings now you can pick up a wireless signal from a marina if you are close enough to shore.  Otherwise you will need a cell phone and do Internet service through your cell phone.  Verizon offers a service we have used in the past.  Often we would just take a laptop ashore and use a free wireless service at a coffee shop or somewhere like that.

You can subscribe to a service such as Pocektmail for e-mail and will not need Internet for that if you choose to go that route.

    Have fun.

  3. There is much navigation that you do not do by internet. GPS is used but not through internet. Satellite connection is what is available unless your mooring is near enough someones wireless. Some cities and some marinas have wireless.

  4. We live aboard and we use the Internet (oh, you could tell that?). We don't use it at all for navigation (I don't know anyone who does) but I use it a lot for weather forecasting. We're in Greece at the moment and all marinas here (and in Turkey) have wi-fi, usually with free access to the Internet. That's what I'm using right now........

BTW. For weather via the Internet visit www.grib.us.
