I will be staying in Rome for 3,5 days. I know what the major sites are, but I was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions for an itinerary so that I could maximize my time in Rome(as I don't have a clue how much time is typically spent at each place).I will be staying in the Termini area, do you have any general safety tips for Rome (I am a 22yr old male and will be traveling alone)? And my last question, do you know any special deals that allow you entry into all of the major tourist sites for a fixed price?

  1. Wander around the first two days, then shop a full day, go to cultural activities the fourth day, perhaps to Ostia, and finally set things into relaxing half day, having a big lunch, and departing two hours before time. Termini is stuck after lunch, there are few robbers, keep an eye on big luggage.

  2. Duh, see the sites, try the food! I have a resource and he says that alone is amazing!

  3. I am from Rome!

From Termini to S. Maria Maggiore is 5 minutes, so I say to you: begin your visit with this wonderful church!

This is my favourite itinerary (4 days):

There is a bus (the 64) that takes you from Termini to Piazza Venezia! So the start is from Piazza Venezia.

    1st day: Renaissance and Baroque.

Piazza Venezia, Piazza del Campidoglio, Via del Corso, Piazza S. Ignazio, Piazza di Pietra, Pantheon, S. Luigi dei Francesi (with 3 of the most important Caravaggio's masterpieces), S. Agostino (Madonna di Caravaggio inside), Piazza Navona, S. Maria della Pace, Via dei Coronari, Castel S. Angelo, Piazza S. Pietro.

    2nd day: Baroque.

Piazza Venezia, Fontana di Trevi, Quirinale, S. Andrea al Quirinale, S. Carlo alle quattro fontane (look at the Borromini Cloister!), Palazzo Barberini, Fontana del Tritone (Piazza Barberini),  Via Veneto, Villa Borghese, Galleria Borghese.

3rd day: Along Via del Corso & Tridente.

Piazza Venezia, Via del Corso, Piazza Colonna, Piazza Montecitorio, Via del Corso, Via Condotti, Piazza di Spagna, Via del Babuino, Via Margutta, Piazza del Popolo, S. Maria del Popolo (two of the most important Caravaggio' masterpieces), Pincio.

4th day: Area Archeologica dei Fori.

Piazza Venezia, Colonna Traiana, Piazza del Campidoglio, Musei Capitolini, Foro Romano, Palatino, Colosseo, Arco di Costantino.

Rome by night: Via dei Coronari (at six pm!), Gianicolo, Trastevere (pub, pizza, restaurant), Campo de' Fiori (pub, disco), .

    If you stay another day....

    5th day: Trastevere & Gianicolo.

Piazza Venezia, Teatro Marcello, Isola Tiberina, Trastevere, Via della Lungaretta, S. Maria in Trastevere, S. Pietro in Montorio (Tempietto del Bramante), Fontana Acqua Paola, Gianicolo (WONDERFUL!)

This is a site for Roma pass card!

    ENJOY :)))

  4. I am going to be in Italy this summer myself, here's what I have found. (I'm female, 24, traveling solo, etc., so we're in the same boat)

Two things you MUST MUST MUST invest in so that you maximize your TIME and MONEY!!!...

    1. An excellent travel guide. I suggest Frommer's Irreverent Guide to Rome, or Rick Steve's Rome. Although, for a surprisingly good overall guide book pick up MTV's "Italy." It has great info on Rome, and is the easiest to follow.

    2. An ISIC (Int'l Student Identity Card) has a whopping amount of bonuses and abilities to get reduced everything.

Ok, for a good itenerary in Rome, please follow this link. It will show you how to see the best stuff in your time frame. Also, it doesn't matter where in Rome you are staying, the public transportation is EASY and CHEAP. So you can come into the center no problem. From there, everything is within walking distance.

    Good luck!

p.s. to avoid standing in lines, make reservations ahead of time. There are several websites that can help you do this.

  5. I'm not good at planning itineraries but make sure you have the following on your to do list:

    Trevi Fountain

    Spanish Steps

    Roman Forum

    The Vatican

    Villa Borghese

    Colosseum

    Pantheon

    Piazza Navonna

Santa Maria Maggiore Church (near Termini)

Campo de' Fiori (restaurants and bars)

Also, I was 23 and traveled to Rome alone and had a lot of fun. I saw all the sites, but at night I, like most 23 year olds, wanted to go out, have a few pints and meet people. If you're the same, Rome has some great pubs (sounds odd but true). My two favorite places were these two:

I also stayed near the Termini, and here's a couple of local pubs near Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore:

As far as safety tips, the Termini station area is not in the best. It's definitely not nearly as dangerous as walking through the bad areas in some US cities. You should be fine, but just keep your guard up walking around at night.

Above all, have fun! There's not a day that goes by when I don't wish I was back in Italy...

  6. i stayed near termini too when i was there. just becareful of pickpockets (or they normally say 'gypsies') and don't take any cab which don't have the cab sign.

if you are going to places of interests like vatican, make sure you are there early cos the queue is always long.

  7. I'll give you the link to Fodor's on-line.  If you borrowed the book from teh library there are always shorter itinerary's you can use. The one online is for five days, but you'll be able to get a really good idea and perhaps an idea for what you can skip.  Most of the sites are free, it's only museums that will have a charge.  But I do suggest you go to Palentine Hill (the forum) and see it and then in the afternoon you will be able to use the same ticket for the Colosseo and you'll by pass the line.  Nobody wants to miss those sites.

  8. Yes, for sure be carefull to gypsies, do not put money in a pocket. In Termini there is the underground (line A and line B), with the first one you can go to the center ( Spagna station could be a good choise). If you love to walk from Spagna you can go towards Ara Coeli, Campidoglio, Bocca della Verità, San giorgio al Velabro. With line A and a bus you can arrive near Vatican. With Line B (check it because I' m not sure if it is line B) you can arrive at Colosseum, than take a walk towards Fori Imperiali. In the evening do not miss to go to Trastevere, it is a very characteristic place with a lot of pubs and restaurants....a good Pizzeria is in v.le trastevere. This is called "l'obitorio"...great pizza and great supplì!!!!!!!

    Have fun!!!!!
