I will be the 2010 Formula 1 champion – Sebastian Vettel
Even after a disappointing pointless finish at Spa Francorchamps, Sebastian Vettel still believes that he will win the drivers’ title this season.
The German driver finished without scoring any points after crashing in to the McLaren of Jenson Button at the Belgian Grand Prix. He maintained his third position in the drivers’ standings as neither Button nor Fernando Alonso were able to score either this past weekend at Spa.
“I know how good we are - I will take the title. Someone who has the most pole positions must think that way. These 13 races have not run completely smoothly, but I am only 31 points behind. Assuming that we maintain our speed, we can catch up quickly”, a confident Vettel told the media.
Sebastian Vettel has been one of the most impressive new drivers in the Formula 1. He joined F1 in 2007 with BMW Sauber and Toro Rosso scoring 6 points in just 8 races. BMW Sauber and Toro Rosso were not the best of teams that year but still Sebastian’s performance was highly appreciated by the spectators. The German scored 35 points to secure the 8th place with Toro Rosso in 2008 before signing with Red Bull the following year.
This was a huge breakthrough for Vettel as he finally got to drive in a reliable and strong car. The 23-year-old also did not disappoint his team as he scored his first win followed by three more, 8 podiums and 4 pole positions to score 84 points and securing 2nd place in the drivers’ standings. Currently, Vettel is in 3rd place after a disappointing Belgian Grand Prix with 151 points making him 31 points behind the leader, Lewis Hamilton.
His teammate Mark Webber is in 2nd place, 28 points ahead of him. However, Sebastian hopes to score some good points in the last six places and ultimately win the 2010 drivers’ title. The young German hoped that he will come back as a stronger driver after learning from his mistakes. The latest of the impulsive maneuvers punctuated this season was the mistake Sebastian made at the Belgian Grand Prix. “In the end, it makes you a better driver. But I'm also someone who can put things to the past and look ahead when the next morning comes”, vowed the 23 year old.
Meanwhile, the victim of Vettel’s silly move at Spa, Jenson Button also believes that he can still win the title. “I was very dejected after the race and was very down, but in reality 35 points is not that much. If you look in the old money of last year's points system, it equates to 14 points - which isn’t a lot”, Button told a radio show.
Jenson Button is one of the most experienced drivers in the Formula 1 with a career of almost 10 years. He has been a part of William, Benetton, BAR, Honda, Brawn GP and now, McLaren. The British driver managed to score and perform at his best with every team with the exception of Honda as that was the worst time of his career. Jenson stayed with Honda for two years and finished 15th and 18th places in those years disappointingly.
However, his best time was with Brawn GP, as he was able to secure the drivers’ title for the first time with them and had 6 wins, 9 podiums and 4 pole positions. Before that, he impressed the teams and professionals during his time at BAR, where he was able to secure the 3rd place in 2004, keeping in mind the fact that BAR was not as good as the top running teams. The 33-year-old is currently in 4th place behind Vettel with 147 points, 35 points short of the leader Hamilton.
If the Brit is able to pull off a win and the leader of the championship, Lewis Hamilton ends up in fifth place; Button will be ahead of him and probably take the lead. All in all, things will heat up during the last six races and there is going to be a lot more action. Jenson hopes that he stays out of trouble in the coming races and ultimately fights for the victory.
