I will be in Cusco for a week, and I have two days to go on a tour to Machu Picchu. There are several companies offering tours and I'm not sure which one I should go with. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

  1. Hi, my husband and I are going to Peru this September and after doing quite extensive research from the guide books suggestions and travel sections, we decided to go with Tambo Tours, we were looking for reasonable rates, reputable company and not fancy tours. If this is what you are looking for, you can reach them via email at: tambo@2goperu.com or via phone at 1-888-246-7378, the person we coordinated with is Jason Pomeroy and he is extremelly helpful. When you have decided which company you are going with, I would recommend making your reservation of the Inca Trail permit as soon as possible, these permits are limited to 500 permits per day (this number includes, hikers, porters, guides, etc) and they do book up fast, the cost for the permit is $150.00 US, needs to be paid in advance. I hope this information helps, if you need any more info or would like to see our itinerary, you can email me at: hellomarisela@sbcglobal.net Ü

  2. I would recommend SAS travel, there are one of the largest companies and one of the most expensive. However this is because they pay their guides and more importantly Porters much better than some of the other companies.

The food, organization and attention to details is all very good.

So good in fact i don't think i can go back to normal camping.

  3. If you need a trip to Peru send me a mail to southamerica_travel_expert@yahoo.com

  4. Yes many companies offer tour to Machu Picchu and different price, i will recommend visit. www.epuertotravelperu.com  is a companies with partners in USA. and offer a serious programs and services to go to Machu Picchu and other interesting places. send a Email with your questions they will help you, they offer a very good services.

  5. also try www.peruandes.com

  6. I highly recommend what Barring L said. You DO NOT need to hire a tour company. All you need to do is purchase your train ticket and you're there. You may want to consider hiring an English speaking tour guide (if you don't speak Spanish). But there is no reason you should have to pay for this trip through a travel agency.

Enjoy the train ride, it's spectacular. Have fun in Peru!

  7. You can go there easily without a tour if you like.

Buy a train ticket in Cusco (railway station, buy it a few days in advance). Most travel agencys sell train tickets as well.

Train leaves very early in the morning (5 or 6 am), you'll be in Machu Picchu Town (=Acquas Calientes) by noon. From there buses go up the mountain every 10 minutes. You can buy your ticket at the bus station.

Acquas Calientes is not much more than a train station, a bus station and 100 Hotels and Hostels. Once you are there, you can either take the bus up to Machu Picchu -

    OR

use the afternoon to walk the valley, see the hot springs and take a bath. Go to bed early and WALK up the mountain next morning very very early (a killer - 1000 steps straight up).

This way you can be at the temple of the sun to see the sunrise. To get there in time you have to walk, as no buses go that early. But it is absolutely worth it!

  8. Inca travels is good its the one i took and i love Macchu Picchu expecially the sunset there.

  9. I took Inca travels and I didn't have any problem at all.
