I will be visiting Saint Thomas in the Carribeans. Do you recommend any native Carribean restaurants? Are there any fun things to do on this island? I heard Magens Bay beach is crowded. How do I get to "Mountain Top"? Are there any beaches where I can see animals (turtles & fish)? Are there any beach caves to explore in Saint Thomas?

Thanks for the advice!

  1. We were in Megan's Bay 2 weeks ago-I didn't find it crowded at all, but I preferred Trunk Bay, St John, which is just a short ferry ride away. You can take a taxi to Mountain Top--there is no shortage of people wanting to drive you around!!!! Many of the beaches are great for snorkeling--we stayed at Emerald Beach, and my nephew spotted sea trutles, octopus, rays, lots of fish...the people are super nice.

I saw someone recommended Gladys' Cafe--I second that. I love that place!!! Get the guacamole and chips--they're life-changing! Her hot sauce is really something, too...there were 12 of us there, and everyone enjoyed their meals-many local dishes.

  2. Go to Saphyre Beach!! i was there this year and its amazing!!!..i saw a sea turtle while i was snorkelling, and ton's of fish.  When you get on the island there will be tons of people with buses who will want you to get on there tour bus..it costs about 25$ a person and they will take you around the whole island..all the way up to the mountain top, you will get to see sir francis drakes bench, visit home of the best banana dakaries, and they will drive you to the beach...i dont know about any caribbean food restaurants but theres tons of places on the beach to eat at

  3. When I went i stayed at the Wydam Sugar Bay ( I think thats the name of the resort) and they had good food at the resturant there, but besides that idk anywhere else good to eat, i mostly stayed in the rest, it had EVERYTHING!

But what you HAVE to do, is go onto the fairy to St. John, when you get there take a bus or something to Trunk Bay! You will love it there, the snokeling is AMAZING! It has a snorkeling trail matter of fact that you follwing while lookin down. Yea but my sister there saw sea turtles, my brother and I saw eels, and many beautiful fish! You HAVE to go to Trunk Bay, i PROMISE you will ove it, another thing you can do is go deep sea fishing, that was very fun!

Well have fun on your vacation and hope i helped : )

  4. you must try what they call johnny cakes.

they are meat patties seafood are the best

  5. Wow!  Lots of questions there.  Let's see how many I can answer.

For local food there are four places downtown you'll want to visit two of which are on Backstreet.  On Backstreet you'll find Cuzzin's and Friends of Little Bopeep.  In the middle of downtown down Royal Dane Mall you'll find Glady's.  Finally, right next to the Moravian School is Diamond Barrel, a popular local food spot for many years.  Jen's Cafe near the Emancipation Garden also has local food but it's lighter fare.  On the East End I can only thing of one place for local style cuisine and that's Fungi's on the Beach.

As for things to do, I have a top ten list that I'll have to find time to publish on my website at some point because I find myself reposting it often.  Click on the Answers link below to see my most recent post.

Magens Bay can get crowded if it's a day when we have a lot of cruise ships in but it's most on the eastern side where the snack bar is where the crowds gather.  The western side of the beach is just as nice with less traffic which is why the locals tend to hang out there.

Don't even think about walking to Mountain Top.  LOL!  Find a tour or a taxi and they'll gradly take you.  It's a very popular spot so you won't get stranded up there.

I've seen a turtle or two hanging out at Coki Point beach.  Coki is right next to the Coral World Marine Obsevatory.  Coki is a great place to dive and see some underwater beach life.  If you've never scuba'ed and don't want to take the time out for it this time around go on one of Coral World's Sea Treks where you put on a big diving bell and can walk on the ocean floor.

There's only one cave I know of on St. Thomas and it's not on a beach.  You can see it from a beach though.  The cave has no name that I know of but you can see it quite clearly from John Brewer's Bay right next to the University of the Virgin Islands.  Some people have even taken hikes up there.

Hope you enjoy your stay on my island! :)

  6. Here is a link to  restaurants on St Thomas

Two restaurants that you might enjoy that are Caribbean

    Cuzzin's Caribbean Restaurant & Bar

Once a livery stable and cook shop more than a century ago, the building housing Cuzzin's Restaurant on Back Street has been transformed into a comfortable dining room boasting fresh Virgin Island dishes and seafood. Conch, lobster, and fish are caught daily by island fishermen and prepared by West Indian chefs into curries, stews, and other native dishes. "Cuzzin Nemo" (a melange of shrimp, lobster, conch, and scallops over pasta) is a favorite, especially when accompanied by a local beverage of sea moss, maubi, or ginger beer.(340) 777-4711

    Gladys' Café

This charming café in Royal Dane Mall serves breakfast and lunch, Monday through Saturday, for hungry St. Thomas shoppers looking for a true taste of native cuisine. The breakfast menu offers bacon and eggs, omelettes, thick French toast, and freshly baked breads. The lunch menu offers conch and fungi, saltfish and dumplings, and mutton stew. Gladys even bottles her own hot sauce, packaged for diners to carry home as a souvenir.(340) 774-6604

Magens Bay is a must for anyone traveling to St Thomas. Crowds or no crowds. Check out Coki Beach it's right next to Coral World Marine Park.

If you get a chance take the ferry over to St John. Beautiful beaches and a lovely island. Check out the famous Trunk Bay Beach. St John is 2/3rds park land. Very different from St Thomas. It's much more laid back.

Enjoy the Virgin islands, they are awesome)
