I will continue playing Test cricket: Ricky Ponting – Cricket News Update
Former Aussie skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RT-Ponting-c2377, who was dropped from the national ODI squad yesterday, following his poor performance in the ongoing Commonwealth Bank series, said that while he was anticipating an end to his ODI career, he was still keen on continuing
to play Test cricket for Australia.
“I will continue playing Test cricket and cricket for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tasmania-c854 as well," he said, adding that he had proven he was capable of "dominating" in the format, after his impressive performance against India earlier this year.
The veteran batsman was in fine form during http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s Test series against India, in January this year, during which the Aussies attained a 4-0 whitewash. Ponting contributed heavily to the win by scoring 544 runs, including two hundreds and three half
centuries.
Despite the selection panel’s hasty decision to drop him (which he admitted had not been hinted at prior to the commencement of the ongoing tri-series), the star batsman bore no ill will towards the selectors, and admitted that as a batsman his prime job
was to score runs – a function he was unable to perform satisfactorily in the limited-overs game of late.
However, he was keen on looking to the future, and in addition to continuing with Test cricket, and playing in the domestic circuit, the 37-year-old batsman also outlined a specific, long-term goal – participation in the 2013 Ashes campaign.
“It'd be great to get back to the Ashes. If I'm a good enough player to do that then it'd be great to go back there one more time,” he said.
While his ODI career seems all but over, Ponting’s Test career definitely holds some potential. In addition to his stellar performance against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 earlier this year, the batsman currently occupies the 3rd spot on the list of the all-time top
scorers in Test matches with 162 matches and 13200 runs under his belt. Most importantly his knowledge and eagerness to give his all makes him irreplaceable.
“The passion for the international game of cricket for me has not died or changed one little bit (…) All I've got left is Test cricket and I want to make every post a winner with that.”
