  1. I have been to el Salvador a couple of times and don't remember seeing any africian americans, but I was not looking either.  Since el Salvador does not have a Caribbean coast they were not subject to africian immigration.  Most central americans are very open minded and quite frankly have more important things to be concerned about.  As far as safety you and your baby will be as safe as anyone else.  Be prepared to be stared at a little just because you will be something you don't see everyday.  I would suggest learning some spanish before you go it will make you more independant while you are there.  El Salvador is a great place  look at this more as opportunity not a sacrifice.

  2. i have been to el salvador many times.  not too many people of african origen there.

maybe there is some town that they all went to, but without a carribean coast, the previous poster is correct...

the people are HANDS DOWN, the best part of el salvador.  they are great.  they may be curious about you because of your african origen and skin color.....so if you are shy or nervous, well, you will have to get over it.

people down there see a baby and they want to help you....on the bus, up the 2 steps, whatever.....they look out after you.

    not everything is rosey tho....

the capital has some seedy places just like new york or LA or miami.  learn which ones they are and stay away at night...and take taxi's at night if that is where you plan to be for the 6 months

get to know your neighbors and befriend them.....they will really like you and watch out for you if you take an interest in them too. (this was my experience but cannot guarentee you will have exactly the same since i was in the north part in the "chalatenango department" and you might not be.

some towns can be hot and dusty and unpleasant, (i have heard of these in the southwest but i have not been to those. for the most part, it is great down there

some people will understand a bit of english (you may not have a secret language all the time nor will you want one), but they may not be able to produce enough for a good conversation.

i have been there 10 times.  people are helpful and friendly.

    good luck and have fun.
