  1. Buy a book. The three most important parts of shooting pool are your bridge, platform and stroke. Get these down first - if you practice bad habits you will only be able to more consistently create bad results.

The Bridge (how you hold the cue on the tip end) can be open or closed, it doesn't matter as long as it is in a position that is comfortable to you and in complete control. The platform is where I see most amatuer mistakes, you either stand too upright or too closed with your front hip. One of the best tips I can give you on the platform is watch Allison Fisher if you get a chance, she has one the best platforms in pool and her chin almost always touches the cue. Third is the stroke, if you can't make a level stoke on target you will never get better. Your elbow should create a 90 degree angle to the cue and your hand lbe oose on the butt of the cue and should act as a pendulum. I have young players just learning hold the cue with only their middle two fingers when they are practicing to get a feel for a light grip.

To practice a straight smooth stroke put a bottle on the table (coke or a beer bottle) and stroke the cue in and out as far as you can until you can reach the back with your eyes closed and not touch the sides.

After you can make consistent srokes and have good habits your game will improve quickly with practice. And the right kind of practice. Work on ball position as much as on the shot.

One game I use to work on ball position we call Chinese Pool because someone said it resembles Chinese Checkers.

It is a reverse type of pool that teaches ball position and direction. Instead of hitting the cue ball at an object ball, hit the object ball off of the cue ball to make the object ball or another object ball - but not the cue ball. Example, hit the three ball into the cue ball and have the three ball go into the side pocket. Think of it as trying to scratch but you are hitting the object ball first. Or you can use a combination - like hit the three ball into the cue ball and have the cue ball hit the seven into the corner or have three carom off of the cue into the seven to make the seven. All balls are open in this game, it is call pocket and the rules are, make a ball other than the cue ball but the ball you shoot ball must strike the cue ball first. Cue ball in pocket is a scratch.

Play this game enough and you will start to teach yourself english and ball position.

  2. Then buy a pool table. You can get a decent one for under $2000.00

  3. You can get an inexpensive pool table for a few hundred dollars.  I see that the Mizerak Prestige is a 7 foot table for about $370.

It's not the best table, but you can at least practice.  It'd be cheaper than going to the pool hall on a regular basis.  If it turns out you like the sport you can upgrade to a better table.  If you don't play as often as you like, then you haven't invested too much in your own table.

  4. I grew up in a pool hall  and was the best player there for years so I feel qualified to answer your question. The best way to improve your game is practice, practice practice. If there are any pool halls near you you might check if anyone there could help you learn the finer points; english, etc.

  5. the best way too learn is in a bar or pool hall or something i used to go everyday and shoot for like 6 hours st right and u really cant over do yourself cause then u need a break its better to play with advanced ppl cause it helps u fell better about your self when u win dont practice by your self u need competition well i hope it works out for u

  6. Then u can go buy 1 for you to train yourself on.
