Tahir is currently in Lahore, where he is training with the legendary cricketer in order to enhance his skills before the all-important series against England.
The 33-year-old cricketer came through the ranks of junior cricket in the country and played for Pakistan Under-19s in late 1990s. He went on to represent Pakistan ‘A’ later in his career and remained on the fringes of international selection for a number
of years, before permanently moving to South Africa.
Abdul Qadir, who is considered to be one of the greatest leg-spinners to have played the game, feels that Tahir should have been given an opportunity by the national selectors as he could have proved to be a useful asset for Pakistan.
"It's unfortunate that we couldn't have him playing for Pakistan. He was so hardworking and a good learner, and always wanted to play cricket on the big stage. He eventually got there, where he always wanted to get,” the former cricketer expressed.
The upcoming tour of England is of extreme importance for the Proteas as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 will snatch the title from the home team.
Abdul Qadir feels that English batsmen are always at their best in home conditions but he has faith in Tahir’s skills and said that the leg-spinner will play a huge role, if South Africa is to surprise England in the longer version of the sport.
He added, "http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c749 [have always] struggled against spin bowling a lot, but once it comes to their home conditions, they are good. I have shared my past experiences with Tahir, told him how to counter English batsman in their own conditions. I am optimistic
that he will make an impact with his improved bowling."
South Africa is scheduled to play three Tests, five One Day Internationals and three T20s in England and the much-awaited series will commence in July.
