Im thinking of going to a University in either Manchester or Liverpool and don't know whether to do a combined degree in Maths and Psychology at Liverpool and then a PGCE or to do only one subject either Maths or Psychology and then a PGCE or whether to do Secondary Education Maths which leaves me with QTS at the end of it.

Im really confused about which would be the best route and is it easy to get a job in teaching Psychology or Maths?

  1. The best teachers major in their subjects. So major in Mathematics and Psychology and then get training in teaching. The education is much more flexible in that you can continue your studies in either field and pursue careers in those fields.

  2. Route 66

Its got some great diners along it

    Like Goldies Diner in Arizona

  3. There are three routes

    1. Get a BSc degree in one subject, do a PGCE then get a second BSc or BA degree in the other (possibly via the Open Uni).

    2. Get a mixed degree in maths AND psychology (you will have to hunt down a Uni that will do this) then a PGCE

    3. Get a B Ed in secondary education (4 years) specialising in maths and psychology (again you will have to hunt down a Uni for this pair of subjects).

Get in touch with the Uni and discuss matters with the appropriate admissions tutor. Also get help from "Connexions" the employment service BEFORE you decide which route!!

I think it unlikely that secondary schools will want to have psychology as a GCSE subject, this degree will limit you to college teaching. Considering the attitude of pupils in school this would not be a bad idea.

IF you want to teach in secondary schools, maths is ideal since there is a shortage of maths teacher in all parts of the country, you can pick and chose which area you would like to teach.

  4. first of all, LIVERPOOL has an awesome soccer team!!! so yeah, teach it if you love it

  5. I think it is quite easy to get a job in either. It depends where you want to teach etc. What is the best route depends on which is your fave subject and which you would prefer to teach.

  6. GO 4 CHEMISTRY....ITS THE BEST...CUZ MICHAEL TEACHES IT...

  7. I would do a combined degree and then a PGCE - its always useful to have a 2nd subject when applying for teaching jobs, although with maths its unlikely you'll be asked to teach a 2nd subject.

If you do a secondary education degree, you'll be stuck if you decide at any point that teaching is not for you!

Whatever you do, make sure you choose to study subjects you really like - it will make studying so much easier. Keep your options open. Alot can change in the 3-4 years you'll spend at uni getting a degree. Good luck and have fun!

  8. I would do a combined degree and then a PGCE, if you're going for secondary school teaching then a degree with two subjects would be more useful than one with a single subject.  There always seems to be a demand for secondary school teachers so I don't think you would have any great difficulty getting a job teaching. Good luck : )

  9. Psychology degrees are really popular, so i suggest going to do the Maths degree and then the PGCE. When you are qualified you could do a Psychology degree part time and then choose to teach that afterwards.
