  1. My recommendation:

Go to college for two years, or get the requirements you need to become an educational assistant where you live.

Work as an educational assistant for one year or two. Not three months. Not eight to twelve years, just one year or two. You are learning the stuff that students in college can never learn -in college-.

After your year or two as an educational assistant, you are going back to school as an education major to earn your bachelor's (four-year) degree. You will bring what you learned in the real classroom and you will be a more interested and interesting student because of it. At some point, you will have to do your student teaching. All your classmates will be in some kind of shock, but you've been there before. The only difference now is that you are in charge. Piece of cake!

  2. The easiest place to start is to look into the Colleges, Universities, or Community Colleges in your area and look into to their Teacher Education degree programs. (Also think about at what level you want to teach.) You could go meet with a counselor and they could go over the requirements in the program that interests you the most. They also will be able to take into account any course work you've already completed and whether or not those classes meet their requirements.

If you have no course work under your belt, start with your General Education credits and get those out of the way. Where I went to college, you had to apply to the Teacher Education program to get your undergrad degree in that area. So if your school requires that, make sure you do well in your General Education classes because that could affect your acceptance into the program.

Many education classes require time in the classroom. Make sure you do this! It is vital to see whether nor not you enjoy the classroom setting. Also, it helps you become more familiar with being with students. Also talk with teachers you know about what they like, dislike, etc. If you know a teacher, ask if you can come into their classroom and help. The more you are in the classroom the better.

Eventually you will student teach and you will want as much experience before you begin student teaching. Your student teaching scores and feedback are what gets you your "own" classroom.

Good luck! I hope you choose to become a teacher. It is a wonderful profession, lots of work, but so worth it!
